Zadar is indeed a beautiful city, and it is worth staying there one day if you can support the tourist mass. Big. In the city center, maybe 9/10 people are tourists : from germany, Slovenia, Austria, Czech, France...
Zadar looks like Mediterranean cities : high houses bording narow street to keep shadow and fresh all the day, so, there is no cars in the historic center.
I was a bit enough of the baroc syle, but now, I can see different buildings : byzantin, Italian rebirth, antic roman remember the old age of the town.
And for the main part, the city seems to not have been destroyed by the war. So, I like the city, and manage to stay there 3 days.
Talking about war, there is at least a few testimonies : on a hill, I have been surprised to see destroyed building and a destryed Tank (like a T-54 or something like that)... War with Serbia
between 1991 and 1996 is not so far.
And sometimes, on the road, I see a sign representaing a man with military uniform and Croatian flag on the back : general Ante Gotovina, presented as a hero of the war.
So, interested, I look for his biography on the web : she's not measure up to the national praise, and this guy would be seeked by the International Penal Tribunal to answer for his actions during the war with Serbia, during the reconquest... According an article of Jean-Arnault Dérens, "The biography of M. Ante Gotovina remember a lot the one of the commandant Arkan, leader of Serbian milices who's got a terrible reputation. Before becoming in the opposit side "Hero" of the war in the years 1990, Arkan had himself too multiplicated criminals acts in Europe, (...). If M. Ante Gotovina is arrested, he will join in the IPT un real club of ancient of the French Legion."
Effectively, this general has both nationality French and Croatian...

Ante Gotovina is in fact a hero. If you follow his trial in The Hague, you will see that he is on the verge of being acquitted on all counts.
As for comparisons to Arkan, that is ridiculous. For more on the false allegations of Gotovina's alleged "criminal past," you should read the following court document from Gotovina's Hague trial: http://www.antegotovina.com/doc/motion-EN.pdf
